During the first week of every August, Medellin goes into full bloom with the excitement of the Feria de las Flores (Flower Festival). A tradition almost 60 years old, Medellin hosts ten days of various parades consisting of horses, classic cars, pets, and colorful chiva buses that take over the city’s streets. The festival culminates in the grand finale known as the desfile de silleteros, or procession of flowers. Easily the most important annual event in Medellin and perhaps even Colombia, the Flower Festival is reason enough to make a trip to the City of Eternal Spring.
Although it has come a long way from the original five day celebration in 1957, la Feria de las Flores has never lost sight of its roots and continues to honor the silleteros, or flower farmers, from the outskirts of Medellin. Every year, they conclude the festival by bringing flowers into the city on their backs with wooden chair-like contraptions called silletas. During the first festival, the silleteros paraded through the streets of Medellin carrying intricate flower creations on their backs, and as the years have passed the designs have only gotten bigger and more elaborate. The highlight of the ten day festival is admiring the unique silleta designs as more than 400 silleteros participate in the parade.
At night the festivities continue at several concerts, comedy shows, and firework displays scattered throughout the city. Plazas are taken over by a sea of spectators enjoying the free events.
For the duration of the Feria de las Flores, the streets of Medellin are transformed into one enormous party where locals and foreigners alike revel in the city’s heritage and culture.

The finca was unbelievable. The house was open-aired with hammocks hanging everywhere, sitting right atop a high bluff looking down at a valley and river, with steep rock cliffs and a waterfall behind you. The horses were young and eager to run (much different than the old sway backs you get at a dude ranch!), and the food there was wonderful. -Ashley E.

Hands down, the highlight of my trip to Colombia was my stay with Marcela and Noah at Su Casa Colombia. It is clear how much they love their country and their enthusiasm is contagious! I learned so much about the culture (especially the food!) and felt that my time spent there was truly unique and authentic...livin' like a local! Our trip to the finca and waterfall rappelling was crazy fun! I knew I was in good hands and it definitely rivals sky diving for the biggest adrenaline rush I've had. And let's not forget all the wonderful food we had thanks to the incredible staff at the finca. I can't wait to go back! Thank you Su Casa Colombia! -Joanna M.
